Buying Guide

Bodyboards look simple, but there’s a lot of science and design innovations that go into making them scoot around the water the way that they do.

Here’s where we’re going to dig in and talk about some of the things that you should know when you’re looking for the best bodyboards.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an advanced rider or an amateur; these points can come in handy to ensure you get the best bodyboard for your particular riding style.

Five Bodyboard Features to Consider

Your bodyboard has some design elements that have taken decades to perfect. Chief among them are the core including stringers and any meshes, the slick (or underbody), the rails, and the topside material.

Here, we’re going to explore these so you know what they mean for you as a rider.

The Foam Core

The core of any bodyboard is made up of a plastic foam. This foam can be one of several types, ranging from polypropylene (PP) to polyethylene (PE) to expanded polystyrene (EPS).

Every foam is different in that it has a different density. This variable density determines the initial flexibility of the board. For example, EPS is extremely stiff and very light, whereas PE has the most flex.

Here’s a chart to give you a look at the different types of foam and their characteristics.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Polypropylene (PP) Polyethylene (PE) Hybrid Foams (NRG)
· High Stiffness

· Used in beginner boards

· Extremely Stiff

· Stiffens even more in cold water

· Extremely buoyant

· Low Stiffness

· Overflexes in warm water

· Can take on water

· Variable stiffness using a combination of soft and stiff foam cores and inserts

Stringers and Meshes

A stringer is a tube that is roughly a centimeter in diameter. It runs from the tail of your board to a point that is close to the nose.

A stringer can be made of nearly any material, from plastics in lower end boards, to composites and carbon fibers in higher end bodyboards.

A stringer is essentially a way to control the flex and stiffness of your board. A firm stringer will stiffen your board and give it more memory (the ability to return to its original shape).

When a board is made up of NRG hybrid foams, you can use a stiffer foam as a stringer.

A mesh is another layer that often lays underneath the slick so that you get an additional axis of flexibility. Meshes are extremely lightweight, so you can add it to your board without drastically increasing its weight and drag.

The Top Deck

The top of the deck and the rails are usually made of a dense polyethylene foam that is either textured or smooth. This foam is highly durable and designed to take on the wear and tear that comes from being touched and handled all the time.

Some decks are covered in PE that has different masses such as an 8 pound PE. The higher the mass rating, the more durable and stiffer that the covering will have.

The top of the deck will also have grooves or bulbs built in. These contoured shapes help give you more control as you ride, ensuring that you don’t slip as you go.

If you need additional traction, waxing is always an alternative and a great way to ensure that you get a better grip on your board.

The Bottom of Your Board

The bottom of the board is also called the slick. The slick is usually made of one of two materials: high density polyethylene or Surlyn. Both have similar friction coefficients, which means that they can get you equivalent speeds. The primary difference lies in their durability.

HDPE is much like super thick plastic wrap. And like plastic wrap, if you over flex your board, the HDPE slick can crease. And once it creases, your bodyboard will never ride the same again.

On the other hand, Surlyn is more akin to a rubber. It’s actually the same substance that is used to coat golf balls. So it can flex and rebound, and if you do get a crease in it, it isn’t the end of your board.

So if you’re only using your board for coasting in to the shore, then an HDPE slick will do fine.

However, if you’re planning on shooting tubes or doing any sort of tricks, then you’re going to want a Surlyn slick so that if you do over flex your board, you won’t ruin it.

The Rails

The rails on your bodyboard are the sides. These are usually separate pieces of high density foam that are shaped specifically to give you a particular speed and control profile.

The sides of your board are usually a straight edges that meet at an angle. Rails are measured using a fractional profile with the top number referring to the proportion of the bottom rail edge to the lower number, which is the proportion of the upper rail length.

So a 50/50 rail has equal upper and lower rail lengths, while a 60/40, which is one of the most common, has a lower rail that is in 60/40 proportion to the upper rail edge length.

Common rails com in 55/45, 60/40 and even 70/30.

Another distinction of rails is that they can either be soft edges or firm. A soft edge is rounded, while a hard edge has straight lines. The proportions from the rail measurement remain the same.

This is important because the longer the bottom rail (or the higher the top number), the faster the board will go and the less control you get.

How to Properly Size Your Bodyboard

Sizing your bodyboard is extremely important. You want the right size board so that you aren’t trying to maneuver something too big for you to control properly in the waves, and you also don’t want to feel like you’re riding a toothpick.

The most important dimension in bodyboards is the height or length. Ideally, a bodyboard will come up to be level with your belly button.

The width and thickness of a bodyboard are primarily personal taste issues. Some people prefer wider boards for the stability and speed that they give, while others prefer the maneuverability and quick response of a more narrow board.

The same properties also apply to a board’s thickness. A thicker board is more stable, while a thinner one flexes more and will respond snappily to a rider.

FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions.

Should you always wax your bodyboard?

Waxing your bodyboard is a matter of preference, but we say that a little extra grip never hurt anyone, especially if you’re riding a new board.

New boards have an layer of protection that is applied at the factory, and this can be a little slippery. To begin with, you should put wax on the nose and the tail, as those are the areas where you’re most likely to slip.

Some people also like to wax where their chest lays to prevent it from shimmying all over the board. Where you wax your board is a matter of personal preference, but a good layer of wax will help keep you stable in the pipe.

What is the IBC?

The IBC is the International Bodyboarding Corporation and is who is responsible for organizing, promoting, and running bodyboarding competitions across the world.

It just took over this job from the APB, which was the Association of Professional Bodyboarders after a few months of negotiation.

The overall goal of the IBC is to “professionalize and legitimize the world bodyboarding tour in the eyes of the local communities in which the events take place.”

This transition has also changed the model of competitions to a non-profit, to enhance the safety of the sport and for the riders.

Question 3? What do Stringers do for a bodyboard?

Different boards are made up of different core types. These can be Polyethylene, Polypropylene, or EPS (Styrofoam). These materials have different flexibilities and stiffness, and that can change depending on the temperature of the water.

To fight this, manufacturers introduce stringers, which are essentially carbon fiber tubes that run down the center of the board. These tubes let you change the feel of the board, making it super flexible or super stiff, depending on your preference.

One newer innovation is the ISS, or Interchangeable Stringer System, which allows you to change out your stringers as you like, letting you adjust your board’s feel on the fly.

Conclusion

The best bodyboards for our money remains the Mike Stewart Science Pocket board. Its combination of features with nearly zero downsides makes it perfect for tube riding or just getting speed and coasting along.

Our runner up for best bodyboards was the Ben Severson Design BSD board, which has a ton of features, but lacks the supporting mesh that the Pocket contains.

And if you’re just looking for a good entry level bargain board, the Mach 7 from Tom Morey will not disappoint you in the least.
